Pre-Hire Testing

Pre-Hire testing with the Greensboro Police Department is designed to ensure our recruits are serious about doing this serious job. We’ve utilized two tests that examine your ability to handle real on-the-job experiences of our officers: The Nelson-Denny Reading Test and the Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT).

Nelson-Denny Reading Test

This reading test includes a vocabulary test and a reading comprehension test. In the vocabulary section, you will be expected to answer 80 to 100 multiple-choice questions in a 15-minute timeframe. In the reading comprehension section, you will be asked to read five to eight short passages, each followed by a set of questions asking you to identify correct content from the passage as well as draw inferences. You will have 20 minutes to answer 36 to 38 multiple-choice questions on the reading comprehension section.

Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT)

The POPAT includes physical exercises police officers experience in the field. All applicants are encouraged to practice these exercises before test day to feel comfortable and prepared.

PHASE 1:

Chase and Apprehension Scenario
Maximum time: 7:15

You will do all steps below 2 times.

STEP 1.
Begin sitting in a chair
On the command of “Go” the participant will:

  • get up from the chair
  • advance 40 feet around the cone
  • go back around the chair 2 times

STEP 2.

Broad jump over a 4 foot area which will be indicated by 2 lines on the ground 4 feet apart.

(You must clear the line for the event to count.)

GPD (POPAT) Test

STEP 3.

Clear a 4-foot fence.

(The event must be accomplished safely, which will be performed by placing both hands on the fence and going over the top of the fence in the safest manner possible.)

STEP 4.

Crawl under a 2 foot obstacle.

(If you move the obstacle, it will be placed back into position, and you must attempt the obstacle again until successfully completed.)

STEP 5.

You will then go around to the back cone and run back to the roll bag and the mat.

STEP 6.

Once at the bag roll, you will mount the bag in a straddle position.

Begin with outside knee down on the ground. As you roll over the top of the bag, you will be careful to make sure that your outer knee touches the ground. As you roll back over, your original knee must touch the ground. This will count as one repetition.

You will need to do 3 of these rolls.

POPAT Greensboro PD Physical Abilities Test for officer applications

STEP 7.

Complete 10 push-ups.

The push-up form will be defined as having your hands about shoulder-width apart, body straight and off the ground in a fully extended position.

You will lower yourself to where your chin will touch a 4-inch foam block and return to a fully extended position for the repetition to count.

(Since you will be doing this step 2 times, you will do 20 push-ups in all.)

YOU WILL COMPLETE THE ABOVE STEPS TWO TIMES!


PHASE 2:

Rescue Scenario
Maximum time: 3:30

STEP 1.

You will start at a cone, advance 50 feet around another cone and back two times.

STEP 2.

Complete 30 steps on the step box.

Place both feet on the box, and both feet back down to complete one repetition.

STEP 3.

Advance 50 feet around the original cone and back 2 times.

STEP 4.


Drag the dummy backward across the 25-foot mark, indicated by a cone, and back across the original line.

There is no wrong way to drag the dummy, but the participant has to move backwards while dragging.
Once the dummy is across the original line, time will stop, and your time will be recorded.
